Sadly, it is more than time for people of South Asian descent or origin to recognize that to the MAGA crowd, they are just like Jewish and Black people: others, at the least to be ejected from the U.S. and at worst to be exterminated. https://wreg.com/news/nation-and-world/19-year-old-illinois-man-plotted-mass-shooting-at-hindu-temple-police-say/
@heidilifeldman I don't know why you believe South Asians don't realize that. I've certainly known that for most of my life -- we are only tolerated for whatever ways in which we can be used. And we have to put in more than twice the effort of a white person to even get a foot in the door. But, as with all minorities, there's a percentage who believe that by disavowing who they are, they will be accepted into white society -- see Dinesh de Souza and Clarence Thomas.
I’m British don’t you know? 🤭🇬🇧

@neil @Shredd_Tone oh oh! Was it the squirting thing? 😂
Yes - which wasn't a prohibition on depictions of women having an orgasm / "cumming", but rather the subset of that, squirting.
Daft all the same, but rather different in rationale to prohibiting realistic depictions of strangulation in sex.

so restricting Ukraine's Starlink was Musk's idea, but after Moscow took advantage he became "alarmed about the possibility of adverse consumer reaction in Europe" to the "night of carnage" and denied responsibility
I mean, it sounds like typical Elon

@dirtycommo i dunno. BASIC is ok for tiny linear programs, and as a way to combine an OS command line with a programming language it's unparallelled, but i didn't really get to grips with programming until i discovered languages that let you encapsulate things in functions

Seems like an Epic fail to me.
Oopsie daisy! An AI agent that was granted access to the server of a Swedish TV production company has deleted the entire edited version of the upcoming series of reality show "The Challenge." It's now been pushed to 2027, weeks before it was due to premiere. Here's @Gizmodo with the details.

US Rep proposes bill to give video game buyers "ownership," not "a license"
There are still significant hurdles ahead, both technical and legislative.

... clears the display again, loads the page from that cache, clears cache upon failure, loads the configured font, asks (via a helper) the page to render itself with the configured page & font, retrieves (via another helper) data for a status bar & asks external code to render it, refreshes display in one of 5 different ways (3 via a helper), if rendering anti-aliased text rerenders a few different times combining results, & logs what it has done.
4/5?
As for the method to render pages of XTC ebooks... It defers to an XtcRenderer before refreshing the displaying or rendering the appropriate error message.
I'll leave it there for today, with how much effort they put into their program's core task of rendering pages of an ebook... This thread has gotten long enough!
4.5/4.5 Fin for today! Tomorrow: The other substates with their rendering & user-input handling!

Unclear to me that The Invitation is a perfect selection to have on the, uh, inflight entertainment system
I am glad that leap seconds are gone, but also annoyed that they ever existed. Time zones are typically an hour wide, some places use the same time zone for geographic regions that span 2-3 1/24s of the Earth's rotation.
This means, simply as an artefact of not living exactly at the centre of a time zone region, the offset between high noon and clock noon is likely to be at least half an hour, possibly over an hour.
Leap seconds correct for the fact that this may have drifted an additional 1-2 seconds in a year. It's second level precision in a thing where the accuracy is measured in tens of minutes.
And that extra precision came with a huge amount of complexity that everyone had to deal with.
@david_chisnall And an annoying followup with anything time related is that it needs to be supported forever so old time data can be interpreted correctly.
The topic for my next usual Monday national network radio tech report will be how the battle over data centers has pushed to the top of voter concerns and may now have major impact on the midterm elections while being barely a public topic at all until recently.
